Royal Auxiliary Air Force Stained Glass Window Update
Wednesday 28th August 2024
We are pleased to share the latest progress on the 601 Squadron Room, stained glass window marking the centenary of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force. Following the announcement of Chad Kenney, a 29-year-old serving member of the Royal Air Force, as the competition winner, the project has entered an exciting new phase.
Chad was one of five emerging artists shortlisted to produce a design for the new window, which will feature the badge of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force. His design, which he described as offering "an alternative perspective," aims to pay homage to the people, past and present, who make up the Royal Auxiliary Air Force in its centennial year. This fresh viewpoint, stemming from Chad’s background as a designer a swell as his military service, resonated with the judges and ultimately secured his win.
Since the competition’s conclusion, Chad has been working closely with his mentor, Deborah Lowe, an experienced stained glass artist, to refine the design. This partnership is central to the project's success, ensuring that Chad’s creative vision is faithfully translated into the medium of stained glass. The design is currently being adjusted based on feedback from the judging panel, which included experts from the RAF Club, the Royal Auxiliary Air Force, and the British Society of Master Glass Painters.
Once completed, this remarkable window will be installed in the 601 Squadron Room and will serve as a lasting tribute to the Royal Auxiliary Air Force’s history. The unveiling of the window, to be officiated by HRH The Duke of Gloucester KG GCVO, who serves as the President of the British Society of Master Glass Painters and Air Commodore-in-Chief of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force, is highly anticipated.
We look forward to keeping you updated on Chad’s progress and the evolution of this significant project. The RAF Club remains committed to celebrating and preserving the history of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force, and this new window will undoubtedly be a fitting addition to our 601 Squadron Room.
