Jonathan Glancey, author of “Spitfire: The Biography”, is researching a new book focussed on Operation Bowler, the Desert Air Force raid on the Venice docks, March 1945.

 

Jonathan is looking for memories, information, personal stories and contacts relating to the raid and of 239 Wing [3 Squadron SAAF, 5 Squadron SAAF, 112 Squadron RAF, 250 Squadron RAF, 260 Squadron RAF, 450 Squadron RAAF] which carried out the Op alongside the USAAF 79th Fighter Group and Spitfire escorts of 7 Wing SAAF and 244 Wing RAF.

 

Just as important as the raid on Venice itself is the lead up to this action as the Desert Air Force honed its skills in support of the US 5th and British 8th Armies
