Applications Sought for New Arts and Heritage Committee Members

The Arts and Heritage Committee is responsible to the Board of Trustees for the management of the Club’s Art Collection, the Library and all matters concerning the Club’s heritage and historical artefacts. We aim to appoint two new members to the Committee in early 2025. Any Club Member may apply, but must have the necessary knowledge, skills and experience to make a valuable contribution to the artistic life of the Club and to preserve and promote its heritage. The term of office would be an initial three-year appointment with an option to extend for up to two further terms, with a maximum overall tenure of nine years.
Purpose of the Arts and Heritage Committee:
The Arts and Heritage Committee Terms of Reference may be requested, but its principal duties include:
- Maintaining a catalogue of Club paintings, prints, silver, sculpture, texts and historical artefacts, empowering delegated sub-committees such as the Library Sub-Committee as appropriate.
- Displaying the Club’s art collection to the best advantage.
- Identifying significant gaps in the art collection and make recommendations to the Board of Trustees for the procurement of suitable works.
- Dealing with offers of donations of works to the Club.
- Liaising with other organisations with a view to offering display facilities and the borrowing of works of art in the Club.
- Overseeing the activity of the Library Sub-Committee and reviewing any recommendations made by the Committee which require Board exposure.
- Addressing all matters concerning the Club’s heritage – including written texts as well as artistic artefacts – liaising with the House Committee and other Committees as necessary
Meetings: The Arts and Heritage Committee meets four times per year, usually on a Thursdays between 1100hrs and 1230hrs. Members are encouraged to meet at the RAF Club, but provision is also made for remote attendance.
Qualifications: For this round of applications, we would particularly welcome applications from candidates who have demonstrable professional expertise in assessing the quality/value of material in the collection (or being acquired for it), and this could be either an artist, a dealer or an art historian those with specialist knowledge of art (including paintings, sculptures, stained glass, silverware and other objets d’art) and knowledge of RAF history and heritage. We are also keen to seek the candidates who can demonstrate a strong track record of sponsorship for arts projects or similar endeavours.
